About The Position

The Virginian-Pilot & Daily Press is seeking an experienced part-time copy editor to manage letters to the editor. This remote position offers flexible hours and requires the editor to prepare and curate reader submissions, ensuring clarity, conciseness, and adherence to style guidelines while engaging with the community.

Requirements

• Strong copy editing skills with a keen eye for detail and AP Style.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with the public and colleagues.
• A deep understanding of the importance of the letters to the editor as a platform for reader engagement.
• The ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• A passion for news and current events, with a focus on local affairs.

Responsibilities

• Prepare a daily file of letters submitted by readers of 600-800 words about current events and local issues.
• Plan writing to meet daily deadlines, with the flexibility to draft in advance.
• Review and select 3-5 letters daily, representing diverse perspectives.
• Ensure letters are clear, concise, and adhere to style guidelines.
• Fact-check and verify sources to maintain accuracy.
• Manage the flow of incoming letters and dedicate time to process them.
• Engage with the community by responding to inquiries and addressing concerns from readers.
• Foster an inclusive environment for diverse voices.
