About the position

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world, is seeking a Copy Editor for its Tysons (McLean), VA office. This role is crucial as it involves proofreading and editing original content to ensure quality, consistency, and adherence to ALPA's voice across various digital and print platforms. The Copy Editor will work on a diverse range of documents, including website copy, weekly emails, whitepapers, newsletters, business cards, and promotional materials. Given the fast-paced nature of the work, the Copy Editor must possess a meticulous understanding of ALPA's policies, governing documents, and style guides, as deadlines are often tight and attention to detail is paramount. In this position, the Copy Editor will engage in both digital and hard copy editing, collaborating closely with a team of designers, writers, and subject matter experts. The role requires a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity of ALPA's communications while ensuring that all materials are polished and professional. Responsibilities

  • Proofread and edit original content for quality, consistency, and adherence to ALPA's voice.
  • Review and edit a variety of documents including website copy, emails, whitepapers, newsletters, business cards, and promotional items.
  • Collaborate with designers, writers, and subject matter experts to ensure high-quality outputs.
  • Maintain a meticulous understanding of ALPA policies, governing documents, and style guides.
  • Manage tight deadlines while ensuring attention to detail in all editing tasks.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required; Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, or related discipline preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a professional copy editor required; five (5) or more years strongly preferred.
  • Editing experience in a high-volume, association, advocacy, and/or union environment strongly preferred.
  • Excellent professional communication skills, both written and oral, required.
  • Proven writing and copy-editing abilities across a variety of technical and non-technical documents.
  • Ability to give direction to designers or writers when changes are required.
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing techniques and software applications preferred.
  • Experience with creative writing is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite is a major plus.
  • Ability to edit and review in French is a plus.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet all deadlines.
  • Ability to interact professionally with all levels of internal and external contacts.
