The Non-Certified Substitute Teacher will be responsible for assuming the daily duties and activities of the regular teacher in their absence. This role involves providing instruction, managing the classroom, and supporting students in their learning. The substitute teacher is expected to report directly to the school office upon arrival, sign in with the secretary, and clock in for their shift. It is important for the substitute to arrive early to review the lesson plans and assignments for the day, ensuring they are well-prepared to take over the classroom responsibilities. Throughout the day, the substitute teacher must take attendance according to school procedures and follow the lesson plans and normal schedule as closely as possible. Flexibility is key, as assignments may change throughout the day. The substitute is tasked with creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, tailored to the maturity and interests of the students. They will work with individuals, small groups, or the entire class to support the teaching of content, and must refer any behavior problems or questionable situations to the appropriate school administrator. Safety and supervision of students are paramount, and the substitute teacher must ensure that students are safe at all times. At the end of the day, they are required to prepare a written statement of completion of lesson plans, noting any changes to the normal schedule, behavior issues, and other relevant information for the regular classroom teacher to review upon their return. Additionally, the substitute should make reasonable preparations for the next day, which may include grading papers, recording issues, and returning the classroom to its original arrangement. The substitute teacher is expected to be present at the school for at least seven and one-half consecutive hours each full day of employment, which includes a thirty-minute, duty-free lunch period. They may also be asked to cover or assist in another classroom during the teacher's planning time. Finally, the substitute must sign out in the office and clock out before leaving.
