About the position

The University of Oregon School of Law is seeking a Copywriter and Managing Editor to join its dynamic Communications office. This position plays a crucial role in shaping the school's overall communication strategy and managing its digital presence, including the website and social media channels. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, creating, producing, and distributing a variety of communication materials such as magazines, e-newsletters, brochures, blogs, advertisements, annual reports, photos, and videos. Additionally, the Copywriter and Managing Editor will develop and administer the school's graphic design, writing, and logo usage standards in alignment with the university's marketing strategy and identity guidelines. Reporting directly to the Director of Communications, the Copywriter and Managing Editor will work independently while frequently interacting with senior management and executives across various departments. This role requires the ability to arrange, write, edit, and oversee the production of engaging content that informs and engages core audiences, thereby advancing the school's internal and external communication strategies and business goals. The position demands a detail-oriented, collaborative team member who is not only capable of directing content functions but is also willing to contribute hands-on to ensure team success. The successful candidate will manage a range of information content, including specialty program communications, dean's office communications, special features, speeches, crisis responses, annual reports, position papers, and publications. Clarity, organization, grammar, and spelling are critical to the success of this role, making it essential for the candidate to possess strong writing and editing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage information content including specialty program communications, dean's office communications, and special features.
  • Write, edit, and oversee the production of compelling content for various communication materials.
  • Coordinate crisis responses in collaboration with university communications management.
  • Produce annual reports, position papers, and other publications as required.
  • Ensure clarity, organization, and adherence to grammar and spelling standards in all written materials.
  • Work independently while responding to senior management and executives as needed.
  • Collaborate with team members to support overall communication strategies and goals.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience as an editor reviewing and correcting written materials for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax errors.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, or a related field may substitute for two years of the required experience.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to adapt writing styles for various audience segments.
  • Ability to research, source, write, and edit professionally published content.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders and work with outside services and vendors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five years or more experience in writing and editing.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with client services and coordinating with diverse constituents.
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and project management tools such as Basecamp, Asana, or Wrike.
