About the position

The San Francisco SPCA, a revered institution in animal welfare since 1868, is seeking a mission-driven Copywriter to enhance and maintain its voice across various marketing channels. This role is pivotal in developing high-quality, engaging copy that resonates with diverse audiences while supporting the organization's business objectives. The Copywriter will be responsible for crafting on-brand messaging that spans multiple formats, including long-form blog posts, social media content, creative taglines, and copy for out-of-home marketing such as billboards and bus ads. The ideal candidate will be a versatile writer and thoughtful storyteller, adept at switching between different writing styles and formats to effectively communicate the SF SPCA's mission and values. In this position, the Copywriter will stay current on digital marketing trends, SEO best practices, and content performance analytics to ensure that all copy is effective and engaging. The role requires distilling complex veterinary and animal welfare information into clear, concise communications that are accessible to a wide audience. Collaboration is key, as the Copywriter will work closely with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Creative Director, and Senior Manager of Communications to produce work that inspires animal lovers and helps define the SF SPCA brand. This position is based in the San Francisco office in a hybrid capacity, requiring a minimum of two days in the office each week, fostering a strong, well-connected team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Creates persuasive and effective copy that aligns with brand messaging and business objectives across various types of communication (digital, print, video, etc.).
  • Writes copy and edits publications such as blogs, newsletters and resources, serving as a contact for both internal and external stakeholders for publications.
  • Stays current on digital marketing trends, SEO best practices, and content performance analytics and uses that knowledge to write effective digital marketing copy.
  • Distills complex veterinary and animal welfare information into clear, concise, and accurate communications.
  • Develops strong, collaborative relationships within the marketing department and across other cross-functional teams.
  • Collaborates with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Creative Director, and Senior Manager of Communications to conceive, develop, and produce work that engages and inspires animal lovers while helping define the SF SPCA brand.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to research audiences to best understand their needs, pain points and motivations - craft compelling content to meet both brand and audience needs.
  • Optimizes copy for SEO and other performance metrics to enhance visibility, engagement, and reach.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience as a Copywriter within an agency and/or in-house team.
  • A portfolio with both creative and editorial work for which you were primarily responsible is required.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a keen eye for detail and catching mistakes.
  • Working knowledge of content strategy and how it informs brand messaging.
  • Demonstrated ability to write concise, compelling marketing copy across channels and adjust tone and voice for different audiences.
  • Strong time management skills with ability to work on multiple projects at the same time, communicate effectively with team members and meet short- and long-term deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.
