About the position

As the company's most senior technical advisors, the Core Network Engineer provides technical expertise, strategic planning, complex network architecture, advanced issue resolution and management, as well as making recommendations to executive management for new technologies and network augmentations in response to business needs. The Core Network Engineer works with internal and external partners to evaluate and design solutions for the core and access networks as well as business and customer requirements which will integrate with and enhance the network. The Core Network Engineer applies complex network knowledge and methodology to ensure cost-effective and optimal use of resources and technology without jeopardizing network integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy solutions for the core IP network to ensure scale, cost efficiency, and high availability (99.999%)
  • Ability to design and implement layer 1, 2, and 3 network solutions
  • Work with internal partners to solve complex designs issues and devise solutions based on business or customer needs
  • Develop circuit deployment standards and proper implementation procedures for business needs
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and create implementation strategies for inclusion in the wider network
  • Conduct extensive testing of new technologies into the existing network and plan methods and procedures for new service implementation
  • Develop advanced optical transport networks for backbone traffic aggregation and transport
  • Ongoing path evaluation and link optimization for maximum network performance and operation
  • Plan and oversee all core network change management activities (peering, transport, hardware, etc) including the development of change and test plans
  • Monitor all core links and interconnections for any potential performance problems (utilization, intrusion, etc)
  • Manage and administer IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to include optimizing space and procuring new space when needed
  • Develop network policies for network wide traffic engineering
  • Mitigate network attacks and develop process and procedures to protect the core network assets
  • Take the lead in troubleshooting and resolving core network outages and developing mitigation solutions
  • Act as the highest escalation point for all customer and service related impairments and outages
  • Assist in the design and provisioning of complex multi-location customer networks (Layer 1, 2, and 3)
  • Train and develop network operation staff for increasing responsibility in the management of the IP network
  • Support all core locations including power, environmental, and security requirements
  • Plan advanced network migration and technology integration into the network
  • Support all backend systems that support the core network including UNIX and virtual environments
  • Work with network operations, fiber engineering, customer service to ensure resolution of advanced issue
  • Develop and publish core network diagrams to include Layer 1, 2 and Layer 3 interconnections
  • Develop engineering and operational standards for all circuit delivery methods
  • Develop and publish network architecture and configuration standards for backbone and customer networks
  • Maintain colocation and data center As-Builts/Rack Diagrams/DLRs and incorporate into change process
  • Publish Monthly or On-Demand network utilization and other performance statistics
  • Proper use of back office systems for easy access to all network architectures

Requirements

  • 7-12 years of Core Engineer or relevant experience
  • JNCIA Certification (Active)
  • JNCIS - ENT Course completion
  • JNCIS - SP Course completion
  • ENT or SP Certification (SP Preferred & Active)
  • JNCIP - ENT Course completion
  • JNCIP - SP Course Completion
  • Junos Layer 2 and 3 VPNs (JL2V and JL3V)
  • Experience with the following - OSPF, MPLS, BGP, Spanning Tree, IPv6, CoS

Nice-to-haves

  • College degree preferably in Computer Science, Networking, or Electrical/Electronics Engineering
  • Hands on experience with fiber optic base systems
  • Hands on experience administering and managing IPv4 and IPv6 space
  • Experience administering Domain Name Services and policies
  • Experience in the operation and implementation of IP networks
  • Solid understanding of internet routing and advanced network peering
  • Knowledge of data centers and data center operations
  • Experience with AC and DC power systems
  • Ability to multitask and work well under pressure
