About the position

The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Core Facility Manager to oversee the operations of its core facility located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. This full-time position is essential for maintaining and tracking the usage of all facility equipment, ensuring that it operates at peak efficiency. The Core Facility Manager will be responsible for coordinating regular maintenance and service for malfunctioning instruments, as well as staying updated on the latest technologies available in biomedical research. A key aspect of this role involves training core users on the proper usage of equipment, thereby enhancing the overall functionality and accessibility of the facility's resources. In addition to equipment maintenance, the Core Facility Manager will perform validation and initial testing of new technologies and methods within the core facility. This includes coordinating and presenting workshops and seminars to educate users about advanced and new equipment. The manager will also represent the core facility at scientific meetings and conferences, showcasing its capabilities and resources. Annual reporting is a critical responsibility, requiring the manager to track and document equipment usage and ensure proper acknowledgment in grants and publications that stem from this usage. The role also involves assisting both internal and external core facility users with experimental design and data interpretation, contributing to investigator grant applications and publications through letters of support and data acquisition. The Core Facility Manager will work closely with the Director to make informed decisions regarding equipment purchasing needs, preparing specifications and quotes for new equipment, and meeting regularly with primary investigators to assess new resource needs. Furthermore, the manager will generate and implement facility policies and standard operating procedures, assisting the Director in establishing long-range vision and goals for the core facility. This includes determining scheduling, workflows, and resource management to maintain effective operations. The Core Facility Manager will also provide access to facility resources for university laboratory courses and instruct students on the technology involved in facility equipment. Occasional travel within Mississippi may be required to recruit users to the facility and attend relevant conferences. The manager will also facilitate purchases for facility supplies and services, ensuring timely payment and processing of invoices. Other duties may be assigned as necessary, making this a dynamic and multifaceted role within the university's research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all facility equipment to ensure peak operation.
  • Coordinate regular maintenance and service for malfunctioning instruments.
  • Maintain up to date training and knowledge of all facility equipment and new technologies available in biomedical research.
  • Train core users on proper equipment usage.
  • Supervise usage of instruments.
  • Perform validation and initial testing of new technology and methods in the core facility.
  • Coordinate and present workshops and seminars for advanced and/or new equipment.
  • Present core facility capabilities and resources at scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Complete annual reporting required by Director.
  • Track and document usage of equipment and ensure acknowledgment in grants and publications derived from equipment usage.
  • Assist internal and external core facility users with experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Contribute to investigator grant applications and publications through letters of support and data acquisition.
  • Perform data collection and analysis for external core users from other institutions.
  • Assist Director in making decisions regarding equipment purchasing needs within core facility.
  • Obtain specifications, quotes, and prepare purchasing details for new equipment.
  • Meet regularly with primary investigators and core users to determine new core resource needs.
  • Generate and implement facility policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Assist Director in determining long range vision and goals for the core facility, including new equipment, space and organizational needs, and usage patterns.
  • Determine scheduling, workflows, and resource management to maintain effective operation.
  • Work with faculty to provide access to facility resources for university laboratory courses.
  • Instruct students on facility equipment technology.
  • Implement and collect rates and fees for usage and training on core facility equipment.
  • Facilitate purchases for facility supplies, equipment, and services; Complete institutional processes required to ensure timely payment or processing of invoices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in biomedical sciences or related discipline.
  • Three years of experience in use of advanced imaging, biological science, and biomedical research instrumentation.
