About the position

The Corporate Assistant Controller at Alex Lee is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the corporate financial reporting and payroll functions of the organization. This position works closely with the Corporate Controller to ensure that financial statements are prepared accurately and in a timely manner, while also maintaining effective internal controls. The Assistant Controller will be tasked with managing income tax accounting and compliance, as well as overseeing financial software management functions. Additionally, this role encompasses all aspects of the corporate payroll function, ensuring that payroll processes are executed efficiently and accurately. In this role, the Assistant Controller will select, train, and provide direction to assigned personnel, contributing to employee development and the achievement of departmental objectives. The position requires a thorough understanding of accounting regulations and the ability to analyze and implement new accounting pronouncements. The Assistant Controller will review procedures and documentation related to these regulations, propose necessary changes, and communicate and implement those changes across the organization. The Assistant Controller will also be responsible for the accurate and timely issuance of corporate financial statements, including those for Alex Lee, Inc. and its subsidiaries. This includes managing specialized corporate accounting topics such as tax provisions, insurance, pensions, and employee benefits. The role involves liaising with third-party providers regarding income and payroll tax compliance and leading continuous improvement initiatives to enhance financial reporting processes. Furthermore, the Assistant Controller will develop management reporting that provides insights for executive decision-making and administer stock-based compensation plans and equity transactions.

Responsibilities

  • Selects, trains, and provides work direction to assigned personnel to contribute to employee development and the accomplishment of assigned objectives.
  • Provides direction to the corporate payroll department to ensure timely and accurate completion of weekly and year-end payroll processes.
  • Analyzes and implements new accounting pronouncements or regulations, reviewing procedures and documentation for compliance.
  • Works with finance teams and independent auditors to ensure accurate interpretation and implementation of accounting regulations.
  • Oversees the accurate and timely issuance of corporate financial statements for various corporate entities.
  • Manages the accurate recording of specialized corporate accounting topics, including tax provisions and employee benefits.
  • Manages the annual financial audit and reviews benefit plan audits required by ERISA.
  • Acts as the primary liaison with third-party providers regarding income and payroll tax compliance.
  • Leads continuous improvement of financial processes to ensure timely and cost-effective reporting.
  • Develops management reporting to inform executive decision-making.
  • Administers stock-based compensation plans and equity transactions in a timely manner.
  • Participates in financial activities such as budgeting, financial planning, and analysis as directed by the Corporate Controller.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws, financial policies, and GAAP.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • At least 10 years of accounting experience, with some supervisory experience.
  • Valid CPA license is required; MBA is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of financial statements and GAAP requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with tax consultants and knowledge of federal and state income tax compliance concepts.
  • Technical abilities to maintain and maximize benefits from financial information systems.
  • Outstanding leadership skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in financial planning and analysis for real estate.
  • Familiarity with stock-based compensation plans.
