About the position

The Corporate Coding Education Trainer at Nuvance Health plays a crucial role in developing and executing training programs tailored to meet the coding education needs of internal teams. This position is essential for creating a robust internal pipeline of talent for coding roles that are often hard to fill. The trainer will be responsible for designing a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses the coding criteria, guidelines, and quality standards necessary for accurate coding assignments. This role requires a deep understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and various coding methodologies, including ICD-10, CPT®, and DRG reimbursement methodologies. In this position, the Education Trainer will conduct thorough needs assessments to identify performance gaps within the coding teams and implement training best practices to address these gaps. The trainer will lead engaging training sessions, ensuring that all team members are well-versed in compliance with federal, state, and county regulations related to coding and documentation. The trainer will also be responsible for creating and developing reports that identify training needs and outcomes, as well as providing educational sessions for new team members. Additionally, the trainer will collaborate with the Clinical Documentation Improvement team to deliver training to providers and assist with focus reviews for ICD-10-CM, ICD-10 PCS, and Evaluation and Management coding. The role also involves maintaining up-to-date knowledge of changes in coding guidelines and communicating these changes effectively to staff and vendor partners. The trainer will utilize a variety of teaching methods, including onsite training, printed materials, and digital platforms, to ensure that all training content is accessible and effective. Overall, this position is vital for enhancing the coding capabilities of the organization and ensuring high standards of coding accuracy and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop curriculum and supportive learning management training materials to enhance teaching sessions.
  • Conduct needs assessments and identify performance gaps, implementing training best practices to align with department needs.
  • Lead training sessions with team members to ensure accurate coding assignments.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and County laws and regulations related to coding and documentation guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, ICD10, CPT®, and coding guidelines.
  • Create and develop reports to identify training needs and outcomes.
  • Provide education sessions for new team members.
  • Develop policies reflecting changes from CMS, AMA, and commercial payors, and communicate these to staff and vendor partners.
  • Coordinate and facilitate current coding education and training using various methods and media.
  • Assist teams with focus reviews for ICD-10-CM, ICD-10 PCS, and Evaluation and Management coding.
  • Deliver training to providers in collaboration with the Clinical Documentation Improvement team as needed.
  • Perform special projects and internal coder assessments as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments to enhance the total provider experience.
  • Assist in logistics surrounding training programs, ensuring rooms and materials are available for training sessions.
  • Stay abreast of new training methodologies and resources.
  • Identify the importance of documentation on code assignment and reimbursement impact.
  • Align conduct with AAPC and/or AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and the Company's Code of Ethics.

Requirements

  • Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA) or Certified Inpatient Coder (AAPC) certification required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in coding, specifically in DRG validation.
  • Experience in teaching or providing education in a healthcare setting is desired.
