About the position

The Corporate Strategy & Business Development Analyst position at Summit Materials is a pivotal role within the Corporate Strategy & Business Development group located in Denver, CO. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to the development and execution of Summit's organic and acquisition-led growth strategies. As a member of a small team of investment professionals, the analyst will work closely with senior management and operating company teams to support strategic initiatives that drive high growth in the construction materials industry. The position requires a proactive approach to managing time and responsibilities independently while demonstrating structured thinking and communication skills. In this fast-paced and collegial environment, the analyst will take an active role in various strategic projects, including leading analytical assessments of operational and financial performance, market dynamics, and growth outlooks. The analyst will also facilitate the annual strategic planning process, which involves regional and operational planning activities, evaluating growth initiatives, and developing enterprise strategy pursuits. This role includes ownership of significant strategic projects, such as large internal capital investments and market expansion initiatives, often resulting from strategic reviews. Additionally, the analyst will coordinate the M&A due diligence process, engage in transaction negotiations, and collaborate with internal management teams and external stakeholders. Financial analysis and execution of acquisitions in the high-growth heavy building materials sector will be key responsibilities, along with presenting acquisition opportunities to the executive management team and the Board of Directors. Responsibilities

  • Support the Summit management team in the development and execution of Summit's organic and acquisition-led growth strategy.
  • Lead analytical assessments and facilitate strategic review of current operational and financial performance, market attractiveness and supply/demand dynamics, and performance/growth outlook to develop strategic action plans.
  • Take an active role in the development of Summit's annual strategic planning process, including facilitation and leadership of regional and operational planning activities, strategic evaluation of growth initiatives, and developing broader enterprise strategy pursuits.
  • Own and lead strategic projects such as large internal capital investments, market expansion or entry initiatives, and enterprise capabilities enhancement, often as an action outcome of strategic review process.
  • Coordinate the M&A due diligence process and transaction negotiation including collaboration with Summit internal operating company management teams, third party consultants and seller stakeholders.
  • Conduct financial analysis, due diligence, and execution of acquisitions in the high-growth heavy building materials sector.
  • Present acquisition opportunities to the Summit executive management team as well as the Summit Board of Directors, actively participating in conversations regarding investment decisions.
  • Contribute to scenario planning, including acquisition and divestiture cases, and economic and capitalization outlook scenarios.
  • Organize and develop internal management communications including growth workshops, acquisition prioritization, and portfolio optimization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a top university with a record of top-tier achievement in work and education experiences.
  • 2 to 4 years' experience in consulting, investment banking, or industry strategy roles and completion of formal training program preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in analytical thinking including the ability to understand and analyze business plans and develop projections in growing markets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities; proactive, self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent research capabilities and demonstrated ability to synthesize and summarize industry research.
  • Ability to conduct rigorous financial modeling and analysis; significant experience with Excel is a must.
  • Familiarity with and the ability to analyze and interpret financial statements.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Familiarity and prior experience with mergers & acquisitions (sourcing, negotiation, structuring, execution and integration), finance, private equity, accounting a plus.
  • Experience with leveraged buyout (LBO) models.
