The Correctional Officer (Correctional Counselor) position at the Federal Prison System in Victorville, CA, is responsible for fostering a humane and secure environment for inmates while ensuring public safety. The role involves preparing individuals for successful reentry into the community, conducting interviews with newly admitted inmates, and maintaining the security of the institution. Responsibilities

• Interview newly admitted inmates as part of the intake process.
• Be knowledgeable of the Central Inmate Monitoring System (CIMS) policy and maintain CIMS certification.
• Participate in inmate program review meetings with other unit staff.
• Serve as the unit expert on inmate personal property and trust fund activities.
• Coordinate approvals/disapprovals for inmates' visiting lists and conduct NCIC checks.
• Maintain the security of the institution as a primary responsibility.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• One full academic year of graduate education in criminal justice or related field for GL-07, or equivalent specialized experience for GL-07 and GL-08.
• At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade in federal service.
• Knowledge of correctional policy and ability to enforce rules and regulations in a correctional environment.
• Ability to make decisions in crisis situations and assess inmates' programming needs.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience as a substance abuse counselor or probation officer.
• Experience drafting reports to summarize assessments or behavior.
• Knowledge of developing and implementing programs.
