About The Position

The Correctional Officer at the Oglala Sioux Tribe is responsible for the first-line supervision of criminal offenders in a detention or correctional institution. This role involves ensuring facility security, staff and inmate safety, and inmate care through various complex tasks. The officer must demonstrate skills in behavior management, leadership, crisis intervention, and documentation while working with a diverse inmate population, including juveniles and adults.

Requirements

• Preferred one year of successful institutional penal care experience.
• Ability to manage people and maintain high moral standards.
• Pass a physical examination.
• Indian Preference applies.
• Bi-lingual in Lakota Language preferred.
• Knowledge of English language structure and content.
• Integrity and ethical behavior are essential.
• Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Pass a background investigation check.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in a correctional facility setting.
• Knowledge of jail management software.
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public and court personnel.

Responsibilities

• Supervise criminal offenders in detention or correctional institution.
• Book prisoners using the Central Square Computer System and conduct searches.
• Complete various paperwork including logs, reports, and forms related to inmate management.
• Monitor daily facility cleaning and complete inspections.
• Transport detained inmates to medical appointments and stay with them as needed.
• Cover shifts during emergencies and extreme weather conditions.
• Adhere to tribal penal code and complete required training programs.
• Participate in mandatory drug/alcohol testing and complete other assigned duties.
