About the position

The Correctional Officer position at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice involves maintaining security and order within correctional facilities. Officers are responsible for supervising inmates, conducting searches, and ensuring compliance with facility regulations. The role requires physical stamina and the ability to respond to emergencies while providing a safe environment for both staff and inmates.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and provide security for inmates in various settings.
  • Conduct searches for contraband and ensure the safety of the facility.
  • Count, feed, and monitor inmates in housing and work areas.
  • Respond to emergencies and provide first aid as needed.
  • Enforce inmate disciplinary rules and maintain records and reports.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to other staff members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of an accredited Correctional Officer Training program is preferred.
  • Knowledge of agency policies, procedures, and regulations is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and coordinate with staff and the public.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or security roles is preferred.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures.
