About The Position

The Correctional Officer position at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice involves the care and custody of inmates, ensuring their security and maintaining discipline within the correctional facility. Officers will supervise inmate work groups, prevent escapes, and enforce strict rules and regulations. This role requires physical stamina and the ability to respond to emergencies while working under moderate supervision.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
• Successful completion of an accredited TDCJ approved college Correctional Officer Training program or TDCJ Correctional Officer Pre-Service Training Academy.
• Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, and lift and carry 45 lbs. and over.
• Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
• Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.

• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine correctional work involving the care and custody of inmates.
• Supervise inmate work groups in their daily assigned duties.
• Prevent escapes and maintain discipline in accordance with rules and regulations.
• Search for contraband and provide security in various areas of the facility.
• Count, feed, and supervise inmates in housing and work areas.
• Conduct 'pat' and 'strip' searches of inmates as necessary.
• Transfer and transport inmates using various vehicles.
• Respond to emergencies and provide first aid when needed.
• Prepare and maintain records, forms, and reports related to inmate activities.
