About the position

The Correctional Officer position at Wabash County Jail involves supervising and monitoring detainees, maintaining security and order within the facility, and ensuring compliance with facility rules and regulations. The role requires effective communication, the ability to handle potentially violent situations, and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain interior and exterior security of the Jail facility, including conducting routine security inspections.
  • Search detainees and cell areas, monitor audio and video equipment, and inspect incoming and outgoing inmate personal property.
  • Assist with booking procedures of detainees, including searching for weapons and contraband, photographing, and fingerprinting.
  • Supervise and monitor detainees during meals, work, recreation, and other activities.
  • Ensure personal hygiene of detainees and cleanliness of cell areas, accounting for cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Distribute meals and medication according to Department regulations.
  • Transport detainees to various locations as needed, ensuring proper communication with courts and personnel.
  • Record and report inappropriate behavior to appropriate department personnel and take corrective action as necessary.
  • Prepare and maintain jail activity reports and inmate records, entering information into the computer as required.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis from an off-duty status.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Completion of Indiana Law Enforcement Academy training for Correctional Officers within one year of employment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications, including taser, first responder/CPR, and defensive tactics.
  • Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
  • Working knowledge of department practices, policies, and procedures related to jail security and safety.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with various stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or correctional facilities.
  • Knowledge of evidence collection and preservation techniques.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and handle multiple tasks under time pressure.
