About the position

The Correctional Treatment Specialist (Case Manager) plays a crucial role in fostering a humane and secure environment within correctional facilities. This position is responsible for preparing individuals for successful reentry into society by conducting counseling sessions, developing release plans, and coordinating with community resources. The specialist works closely with inmates to help them understand their circumstances and develop new adjustment techniques, ensuring public safety and promoting rehabilitation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct group guidance sessions addressing institutional adjustment and interpersonal communications.
  • Provide individual counseling sessions tailored to the inmate's specific problems.
  • Develop and implement release plans in collaboration with community resources.
  • Prepare special progress reports for parole considerations and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Correspond with attorneys, judges, probation, and parole officers regarding inmate cases.
  • Prepare diagnostic studies reflecting developmental and circumstantial factors for assigned caseload.
  • Act as a liaison with other units and institutional employees regarding inmate behavior.
  • Report inmate program progress to the U.S. Parole Commission and assess readiness for release.
  • Coordinate case management services with other correctional disciplines.
  • Maintain security of the institution as a primary responsibility.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A degree with at least 24 semester hours in behavioral or social sciences, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a 4-year degree.
  • For GL-07: One year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement; for GL-09: Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service, including case management and counseling experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in corrections or related fields such as criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or social work.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policies and guidelines.
