About the position

The Correctional Treatment Specialist (Drug Abuse Treatment Specialist) functions within a Bureau of Prisons federal correctional facility, providing essential drug abuse treatment services. This role involves direct services such as individual therapy, group counseling, and drug education, focusing on rational behavioral therapy models. The specialist is also responsible for educating prison staff about drug abuse and treatment programs, conducting assessments for treatment planning, and maintaining the security of the institution as part of their duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct services including individual therapy and group counseling for drug abuse treatment.
  • Conduct drug education and residential/non-residential treatment services.
  • Administer eligibility and psycho-social assessments for individual treatment planning.
  • Educate prison staff about drug abuse and treatment programs.
  • Attend meetings with supervisors and other drug treatment specialists to share information and recommendations.
  • Maintain security of the institution as a primary responsibility.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A degree with at least 24 semester hours in behavioral or social sciences, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a 4-year degree.
  • For GL-09: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.
  • For GS-11: Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
  • Specialized experience in counseling or casework in a correctional or criminal justice setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in developing and providing multi-session presentations or lectures.
  • Experience in preparing analytical reports from multiple data sources.
  • Experience in developing discharge reports and follow-up treatment for inmates.
