About the position

The Correctional Workshop Specialist oversees the operations of the Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) workshop, managing the work of incarcerated individuals while ensuring security and compliance with institutional regulations. This role involves training, quality control, and maintaining records, as well as enforcing safety practices and managing supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee work of incarcerated individuals assigned to the OPI workshop and/or engaged in service delivery.
• Provide security and custody of incarcerated individuals.
• Train incarcerated individuals in proper work methods, equipment operation, and safety practices.
• Enforce institution rules and regulations.
• Maintain control of supplies, equipment, and tools, including daily tool and chemical usage and inventory.
• Assign and review work, schedule incarcerated individuals, and monitor work performance.
• Ensure quality control specifications of products.
• Prepare and maintain records and reports of workshop activities.
• Input data into the manufacturing system as assigned, using ERP.
• Oversee equipment maintenance and workshop cleaning.
• Escort and/or transport incarcerated individuals.
• Oversee shipping, receiving, storage, and inventory of products and materials.
• Prepare and submit reports, including daily and month-end inmate payroll and performance evaluations.
• Attend in-service trainings and work on special projects and committees.

Requirements

• Considerable knowledge of correctional workshop operating policies and procedures.
• Experience in providing work direction to employees or a work crew (18 months training or experience).
• Experience in employee training and development (3 months training or experience).
• Formal education in arithmetic including fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in corrections or customer service.
• Knowledge of purchasing, stores, and inventory management.
