About the position

The Corrections Counselor position at Multnomah County's Department of Community Justice (DCJ) is designed for experienced individuals passionate about assisting adults involved in the criminal justice system. The role involves providing direct client services in various settings, including clients' homes and community facilities, focusing on case management, crisis intervention, and facilitating group programming. Counselors will work collaboratively with a team of professionals to support justice-involved individuals in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Responsibilities

  • Outreach and engagement with clients
  • Conducting case management (1:1 and group)
  • Providing crisis intervention
  • Performing assessments and transition planning
  • Assisting clients with Social Security Insurance and Disability Insurance processes
  • Facilitating group programming
  • Coordinating housing placement and retention services
  • Collaborating with various agencies and programs
  • Updating courts on client progress when necessary

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, social work, or a related field
  • Minimum of two years of counseling and case management experience
  • Familiarity with motivational interviewing and stages of change research
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Experience with the criminal justice system
  • Experience working with parole/probation clients or high-risk populations
  • Familiarity with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and ASAM levels of care
  • Understanding of basic factors of recidivism
  • Experience developing and facilitating skill-based and educational groups
  • Cultural competency in communication
  • Knowledge of community resources
