About the position

The position involves various responsibilities related to the management and care of inmates within a correctional facility. This includes receiving, searching, booking, fingerprinting, and photographing incoming prisoners, as well as maintaining jail security through observation and searches. The role requires ensuring that inmates have access to basic hygiene and welfare needs, preparing and delivering prisoners to various locations, and logging court dispositions. Additionally, the position involves processing visitors, assigning work to trustees, monitoring surveillance equipment, and responding to disturbances or emergencies. The corrections officer must also prepare reports and maintain accurate records.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and photographs incoming prisoners.
  • Maintains jail security by observation of inmates, pat searches, strip searches, and cell searches.
  • Assures that inmates have access to basic needs for hygiene and welfare.
  • Prepares and delivers prisoners to court, doctors' offices, hospitals, and other locations.
  • Transfers prisoners to and from jail and court.
  • Releases prisoners by established procedures or bail, court order, or other authority.
  • Logs court disposition of cases.
  • Writes reports and maintains files.
  • Screens and processes visitors.
  • Processes personal property brought to inmates and released.
  • Assigns and directs work of trustees.
  • Distributes meals to all inmates, assuring that all materials are removed from cells after meals.
  • Advises superior when medical attention appears necessary and maintains physical safety of prisoners.
  • Administers prescribed medications.
  • Monitors video and audio surveillance equipment and other job-related equipment.
  • Receives incoming telephone calls to the department, relaying them as appropriate.
  • Attends training and shift meetings.
  • Responds to and assists with major or minor disturbances, medical crisis situations, escapes, fire, and other natural disasters.
  • Prepares reports, memos, log book entries, and unit rosters.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, or DACA recipient.
  • No felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature.
  • Minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment.
  • Must hold or obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language.
  • Must pass a background investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Must pass a medical and psychological examination, and polygraph test.
  • Must have a current and valid Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Corrections Officer Academy certification.
  • At least 12-months continuous work experience as a full-time, paid, Corrections Deputy.
  • Must have no more than a 12-month break in service from the most recent corrections agency.
  • Pass an oral board to assess knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Meet Thurston County Civil Service Pre-Employment Screening Standards.
  • Meet the Sheriff's Office Employment Standards.
