About the position

The Corrections Mental Health Counselor 3 position at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, WA, is responsible for providing evidence-based mental health programming to incarcerated individuals. The role aims to treat and stabilize mental health issues, reduce risk factors, and promote wellness and prosocial behaviors under the supervision of clinical and administrative staff. This full-time, permanent position requires a commitment to quality mental health care consistent with the Washington DOC Health Plan.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mental health counseling services to assigned incarcerated individuals with clinical supervision and approval.
  • Conduct individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, mental health unit rounds, clinical case management, and mental health assessments as needed.
  • Provide emergent mental health coverage and coordinate care for patients in the Close Observation Area (COA).
  • Document and plan treatment with clinical supervision and approval.
  • Collect data, assess, and document patients' needs and status in their medical charts.
  • Complete Mental Health Encounter Reports (MHERs), Mental Health Appraisals (MHAs), and Mental Health Updates (MHUs) as required by policy.
  • Facilitate and monitor the development and implementation of individualized Mental Health Treatment Plans with clinical supervision and approval.
  • Participate in clinical and administrative supervision meetings to review treatment plans and receive feedback.
  • Coordinate and facilitate transition and release needs of incarcerated individuals with outside agencies and community services.
  • Participate in clinical in-service meetings and trainings, and provide education on mental health topics.

Requirements

  • Certified Mental Health Counselor or equivalent licensure in the state of Washington.
  • Experience in providing mental health counseling services, particularly in a correctional setting.
  • Knowledge of mental health policies, protocols, and procedures relevant to the Washington DOC Health Plan.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with crisis intervention and management in a correctional environment.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based mental health treatment modalities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
