About the position

The Corrections Specialist 3 position within the Community Corrections Division at the Washington State Department of Corrections is a full-time, permanent role focused on the Family and Offender Sentencing Alternative (FOSA) and Community Parenting Alternative (CPA) programs. This position is specifically for current, permanent employees of the Washington State Department of Corrections. The primary mission of the agency is to enhance public safety by positively changing lives, and this role is integral to that mission. The position is located in Lakewood, WA, and operates under a structured program that emphasizes the importance of family management skills and compliance with court-ordered conditions. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In this role, the Corrections Specialist will collaborate with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and other community stakeholders to ensure compliance with supervision requirements and to enhance family bonds. The position requires conducting investigations in accordance with Washington State Law and agency policy, supervising participants in the Parenting Sentencing Alternative, and engaging with families to build the 5 Protective Factors: Parental Resilience, Social Connections, Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development, Concrete Support in Times of Need, and Social and Emotional Competence of Children. The Corrections Specialist will also enforce supervision conditions and lead other case managers, ensuring that all duties are performed within prescribed timeframes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations in accordance with Washington State Law and agency policy within prescribed timeframes.
  • Supervise participants in the Parenting Sentencing Alternative in accordance with Washington State Law, Interstate Compact rules/Regulations, and agency policy and within prescribed timeframes.
  • Engage with participants and their families to work towards building the 5 Protective Factors: Parental Resilience; Social Connections; Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development; Concrete Support in Times of Need; and Social and Emotional Competence of Children.
  • Enforce supervision conditions and the law.
  • Lead other case managers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and necessary.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator's license in the state of Washington.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or three years of professional case management experience in adult or juvenile corrections, including specific case management activities.
  • Two years of experience working collaboratively with other agencies, providers, or local city governments in providing case management that includes direct family re-unification services or family-based treatment/counseling.
  • Associate's degree with five years' experience as a Community Corrections Officer within the Washington State Department of Corrections, or a high school diploma/GED with seven years' experience in relevant case management.
  • Demonstrated competency in community relationships, observation, stress tolerance, professional standards, and adaptability.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in sociology, social work, psychology, criminology, or a closely related field.
