About the position

The Cost Accounting Manager position at Custom Truck One Source is a pivotal role within our established Manufacturing division. This position is responsible for overseeing the accounting functions specific to manufacturing, ensuring that all financials are accurately represented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Cost Accounting Manager will support the accounting objectives and the controller by conducting thorough analyses, performing month-end reviews, and managing regular reconciliations and ongoing operations reporting. This role will also involve direct supervision of the Senior Cost Accountant, ensuring that the team operates efficiently and effectively. In this role, you will assist in the development of a standard costing model for each manufacturing product line, which is crucial for accurate financial reporting and operational efficiency. You will plan, organize, and direct the activities of the cost accounting function, managing the day-to-day operations from reviewing current standards and variances to overseeing the monthly close and analysis processes. Additionally, you will support both internal and external financial and operational audits, ensuring compliance and accuracy in all financial reporting. A significant part of your responsibilities will include analyzing actual manufacturing costs and preparing periodic reports that compare standard costs to actual production costs. You will collaborate with the management team to make necessary adjustments to the standard cost model based on these analyses. Furthermore, you will assist with quarterly and annual physical counts and reconciliations of all inventories, including finished goods, work-in-process, and fixed assets. Your ability to prepare comprehensive management reports on site performance, including key performance indicators such as units produced, raw materials, direct labor, and factory spending, will be essential for informed decision-making within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and ensure the monthly financials for each manufacturing site are timely and accurately depicted in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Help in the development of a standard costing model for each manufacturing product line.
  • Plan, organize, and direct activities of the cost accounting function.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the existing cost accounting function from review of current standards and variances to monthly close and analysis.
  • Support internal and external financial and operational audits.
  • Analyze actual manufacturing costs and prepare periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs, working with the management team on adjustments needed to the standard cost model.
  • Support and assist with quarterly and annual physical count and reconciliation of all inventories (finished goods, work-in-process, and parts) and fixed assets.
  • Assist with the development of business cases around enhancements to production capacity.
  • Accurately prepare daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual management reports.
  • Provide the management team with monthly management reporting on site performance including units produced, raw materials, direct labor, direct material, burden/absorption, factory spending, warranty, scrap/waste and other key performance indicators.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of general and/or cost accounting, preferably in a Manufacturing Environment
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • Must have excellent analytical skills
  • Sound understanding of accounting principles
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Experience with continuous improvement around undefined processes
  • Strong quantitative and analytical competency
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Familiarity of Sarbanes Oxley
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Positive attitude and works well with a team
