About the position

The Cost Engineer at The Middlesex Corporation plays a crucial role in maintaining an accurate cost structure and coordinating essential reporting elements that contribute to the development of precise cost reports. This position serves as a vital interface between project management, cost management, and accounting, ensuring that all financial aspects of construction projects are meticulously tracked and reported. The Cost Engineer is expected to uphold the company's core value of safety by actively promoting and complying with all safety policies and procedures. This includes the responsibility of reporting all accidents, incidents, and near-misses to maintain a safe working environment. In this role, the Cost Engineer will review project features in collaboration with the Estimating department, ensuring that work quantities are accurately entered on a daily basis. They will also verify the proper coding for phases, hours, and slips, and will be responsible for closing out completed project phases while verifying progress entries. Monthly cost review meetings with the project team will be conducted to assess financial performance and address any discrepancies. The Cost Engineer will take the lead in developing quarterly cost-to-complete reports and will be responsible for reviewing and processing change orders for both The Middlesex Corporation and its subcontractors or vendors. They will also identify items that exceed the budget and communicate these findings to the Project Manager. Additionally, the Cost Engineer will assist the project management team with quarterly reports that cover contract status, contract profit, unit cost reports, cost projections, revenue projects, change order status, and change order costs. Responsibilities

  • Comply with and actively promote all Safety policies and procedures, including reporting all accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
  • Review project features with the Estimating department and ensure that work quantities are being entered correctly on a daily basis.
  • Verify proper coding for phases, hours, and slips.
  • Close out the completed project phases and verify progress entries.
  • Conduct monthly cost review meetings with the project team.
  • Assign and initiate new cost codes for change orders, tracking items, and back charges as required.
  • Verify pencil sheets and pay requisitions.
  • Lead the development of quarterly cost to complete reports.
  • Review and process change orders for TMC and subcontractors/vendors.
  • Review and process cost adjustments.
  • Identify items that are exceeding the budget and communicate to the Project Manager.
  • Assist the project management team with quarterly reports for contract status, contract profit, unit cost report, cost projections, revenue projects, change order status, and change order costs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience working with project management and a thorough knowledge of heavy construction logistics, resource planning, construction sequencing, and material management preferred.
  • Familiarity with a variety of field construction concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Viewpoint Accounting and Job Costing System is desirable.
  • Ability to adapt to different personalities and management styles.
  • Attention to detail, organization, prioritization, and the ability to handle multiple tasks is required.
