About the position

The Costume Assistant for Dance at Swarthmore College is responsible for overseeing and managing costume support for various dance performances produced by the Dance Department. This part-time position involves collaboration with faculty and students to ensure the successful execution of costume construction, alterations, and maintenance for dance concerts and projects. The role requires flexibility in scheduling to accommodate academic and performance activities, and it emphasizes a commitment to the educational and artistic standards of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with the Chair of Dance and Faculty Production Manager regarding the performance calendar, work schedule, and budget per concert.
  • Collaborate with faculty and student designers, directors, and choreographers to assess specific performance needs.
  • Supervise costume construction, purchasing, and alterations for the 2-3 annual dance concerts and standalone senior projects.
  • Attend regular production meetings for the dance concert, including group and individual meetings with choreographers and LPAC team.
  • Supervise costume pulling from stock and necessary alterations for studio performances: 3 Minutes Max and two dance lab showings.
  • Provide costume support for touring dance companies presented by the Cooper Foundation or the Dance Department.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BA or BFA, preferably in Theater or Dance, with an emphasis in costume design and construction.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of costume design and construction for theater and dance.
  • Two to three years of professional experience in costume shops and on dance productions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Willingness to work overtime (35-40 hours total) for two weeks during the Dance Department's dance concerts.
  • Familiarity with a diversity of dance forms and costuming related to dance, preferably with experience in at least 1-2 forms offered in the Dance Department curriculum.
