About the position

The Counselor for Accessibility Services at the Community College of Baltimore County is responsible for supporting students with disabilities and ensuring the college is accessible to all. This role involves managing the Disability Support Services (DSS) Center, coordinating accommodations, and providing guidance to students under the mandates of the ADAAA. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to promote student success and compliance with relevant laws and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Support students with disabilities and the general student population as needed.
  • Lead and manage operations of the campus Disability Support Services (DSS) Center.
  • Coordinate efforts to make the Community College accessible to all students with disabilities.
  • Evaluate needs for classroom accommodations and provide appropriate accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Provide ongoing support to the college community and foster inter-departmental communication regarding services for students with disabilities.
  • Conduct interviews with students seeking accommodations for disabilities.
  • Manage an active caseload of students with disabilities and track outcomes and reporting statistics.
  • Collaborate with professionals and faculty to coordinate accommodations for students.
  • Provide outreach, connection, and advocacy to promote student persistence and retention.
  • Use problem-solving skills to address complex issues and educate students in self-advocacy.
  • Provide academic advising and assist students in resolving access-related problems.
  • Maintain and update confidential files and program records accurately.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Human Services (e.g. Social Work, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education or related field) required.
  • Three years of professional work experience providing services for individuals with disabilities, preferably in a college or university setting.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws regarding post-secondary students with disabilities.
  • Experience accessing and entering data into a Student Information System (such as Banner) is required.
