About the position

Under the general direction of the Counseling Services and Programs Department Chair and the Dean of Student Success, the part-time counselor is responsible for providing academic, transfer, career, and personal counseling to the diverse student population in credit and noncredit programs. The academic counselor will work closely with college students to assist, support and ensure that they are on the right path to achieve their educational and career goals. This position may include work in the evening and/or weekend to meet student needs as necessary. This position may be assigned to one or more of the counseling locations under the Counseling Services and Programs Department on the Ocean campus or at the Centers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to assist students in achieving their educational and career goals.
  • Assist students to understand and develop educational and career goals and objectives.
  • Assist students in making informed educational and vocational/career decisions.
  • Assist students to build comprehensive student educational plans that include appropriate course selections and service referrals.
  • Evaluate college transcripts from multiple institutions and how they apply towards various education and career goals.
  • Connect students with appropriate academic and student support services to enhance student success.
  • Conduct workshops and orientation sessions to both credit and non-credit students.
  • Provide crisis counseling while demonstrating sensitivity and understanding of diverse perspectives.
  • Assist in an early intervention counseling system, including referral and follow-up.
  • Teach AAPS and/or CRER classes to both credit and non-credit students as assigned.
  • Serve as Liaison and conduct outreach activities to other educational institutions.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with instructional and student affairs departments.
  • Assist with the student learning and student services outcome assessment.
  • Participate in Student Affairs Divisional Meetings and professional development trainings.
  • Support and engage in an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive and anti-racist practices.
  • Participate in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities and diverse backgrounds.
  • Earned Master's Degree in Counseling or related field from an accredited institution; or a Bachelor's Degree with a valid California license in Marriage and Family Therapy.
  • Hold a fully-satisfied Life California Community College Counselor Credential.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least one year of demonstrated education counseling employment experience in an accredited community college.
  • Demonstrated experience in community college counseling with a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing education plans for students.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to use current and emerging technology and software programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with inequities in higher education and a commitment to supporting historically minoritized students.
  • Ability to provide bilingual counseling in a language other than English.
  • Experience in teaching counseling curriculum and conducting workshops.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and assessing student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with stakeholders to support student equity and success.
