About the position

The Counselor position at Newport Healthcare involves providing individual counseling and facilitating psycho-educational group sessions for adolescents and young adults. The role serves as a bridge between the clinical team and direct care staff, ensuring effective milieu management and support for clients' treatment goals. Counselors are responsible for conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and providing crisis intervention as needed, all while fostering a compassionate and supportive environment for clients and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate weekly individual counseling and skills-based, psychoeducational group sessions with adolescents/young adults.
  • Provide a stable and consistent presence in the milieu by supporting Care Coordinators in managing clients.
  • Evaluate reflective assignments and advancement recommendations based on client's progress.
  • Schedule experiential and recreational activities associated with earned privileges.
  • Develop treatment goals and coordinate services in collaboration with the client's treatment team.
  • Conduct risk or crisis assessments and provide crisis intervention/management as needed.
  • Provide substance use education to clients, families, and in the community.
  • Complete required documentation timely and according to established standards.
  • Provide service coordination, case management, and discharge planning support as needed.
  • Attend weekly treatment team meetings, staff meetings, and clinical supervision.
  • Distribute weekly action plans for each client to staff.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and conferences representing Newport Healthcare.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field required.
  • Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field preferred.
  • Credentialed as a mental health or substance abuse counselor preferred.
  • Experience working with individual and/or group therapy with young adults/adolescents required.
  • Experience with mental health, substance abuse, or trauma-informed treatment preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Willingness to pursue certification in the state in which services are provided.
  • Prefer board registered with credentialing agency within the state.
