About the position

The Counselor position within the International Student Health Insurance Program (ISHIP) at the University of Washington is designed to provide essential support and guidance to international students navigating the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system and their insurance benefits. The role involves advising students on how to effectively utilize their ISHIP coverage, managing inquiries, and collaborating with various campus partners to enhance student understanding and access to healthcare resources. The Counselor will also oversee the ISHIP waiver process and contribute to educational materials and communications regarding ISHIP benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Advise F-1 and J-1 students enrolled in ISHIP through in-person and virtual one-on-one appointments, drop-in advising hours, and email on understanding, navigating, utilizing, and accessing their insurance benefits.
  • Manage the ISHIP shared email account in collaboration with student assistants, responding to general student inquiries and triaging priority inquiries, complaints, or petitions to the Assistant Director as needed.
  • Oversee and manage the ISHIP Waiver process, ensuring accurate and equitable reviews and entering approved waivers in the Student Database each quarter.
  • Collaborate with Bothell, Tacoma, and English Language Programs, as well as other Seattle campus partners, to promote ISHIP and provide information about benefits.
  • Assist the Assistant Director in updating the ISHIP website and developing communication materials to keep students informed about ISHIP benefits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any field.
  • Minimum two years of experience working with the U.S. healthcare system, medical insurance, or counseling/advising in an educational setting.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience speaking or presenting to groups from multi-cultural backgrounds.
  • Previous experience teaching or advising international students at a university or college level.
  • Basic understanding or experience of F-1/J-1 immigration rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects/deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
