About the position

The County Controller for Weld County, CO, is responsible for providing financial, accounting, and analytical services within the Accounting Division of the Finance Department. This role involves preparing comprehensive financial reports, supervising accounting processes, and ensuring compliance with governmental accounting standards. The Controller will lead the division, mentor staff, and maintain effective communication with various county departments to achieve financial goals and improve internal controls.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Accounting Division of the Finance Department.
  • Supervise staff in the Accounting and Payroll Division, including performance reviews and staff development.
  • Prepare the county's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and coordinate the annual external audit.
  • Monitor internal controls related to accounting processes and improve them as necessary.
  • Lead the implementation of the Workday ERP system and interface with relevant departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field.
  • 5 years of governmental accounting or auditing experience.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience with strong leadership and mentoring skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Experience in compiling a full ACFR for a local government.
  • Experience with the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting program.
