About the position

The City of Markham is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Code/Court Clerk to support the legal team in upholding municipal ordinances, laws, housing and building codes, and zoning codes. This role is essential for maintaining accurate records, managing files, and providing administrative support, requiring professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare evidence supporting the city's legal actions; appear in court as necessary; testify at hearings and court proceedings as required.
  • Adopt, distribute, and process code violation notices and other notices as required under Chapter 40: Ordinance Enforcement Department.
  • Certify copies of final determination(s) of Building Code violation(s) liability and factual reports verifying that Chapter 40: Ordinance Enforcement Department issued the final determination of code violation liability.
  • Promulgate rules and regulations reasonably required to operate and maintain the administrative adjudication of the code violation system.
  • Collect unpaid fines and penalties by filing complaints in the Circuit Court or appointing an individual or agency to act on behalf of the City of Markham in filing complaints seeking judgments for unpaid fines or penalties.
  • Identify, track, manage, and investigate delinquent customer accounts and refer non-compliant accounts to an outside collection agency.
  • Prepare a variety of written reports, memos, and correspondence related to enforcement activities.
  • Record liens based on the water bill, building, housing, and other City fines.
  • Collaborate with the Mayor's Office, Police, Building/Housing Department, and Treasury Departments.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in legal studies or related field
  • Experience working in a legal environment
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy

Nice-to-haves

  • Possess a Driver's License
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess various building, code, and fire certifications or equivalent combinations.
