About the position

The Court Security Officer (CSO) position is a specialized role responsible for providing protective services at or around United States Federal Court Houses and other assigned areas under contract to the U.S. Marshals Service. The CSO operates under limited supervision, performing various security duties including patrols, surveillance, and enforcement of security protocols to ensure the safety of court facilities and personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce the District's entry and identification system.
  • Test and report emergency equipment.
  • Patrol court facilities and grounds in accordance with applicable post orders.
  • Man USMS authorized stationary posts.
  • Provide focused surveillance on incoming traffic to detect threats.
  • Provide armed escort services for judges and court personnel.
  • Provide security services for off-site judicial functions.
  • Direct traffic and control lights on court facility properties.
  • Provide courtroom security during hearings when assigned.
  • Turn over found articles to the COR and complete necessary documentation.
  • Keep supervisors informed of unusual occurrences.
  • Monitor alarms and radio traffic, dispatching as needed.
  • Report and address fire alarms and criminal acts.
  • Screen and inspect vehicles and pedestrians as directed.
  • Maintain necessary licensing and training records.
  • Use communication devices according to established rules.
  • Conduct regular patrols and inspections of buildings and facilities.
  • Issue required badges or passes to authorized personnel.
  • Monitor electronic access control and report violations.
  • Grant access to areas during non-working hours as per established procedures.
  • Perform random surveillance for unauthorized activity.
  • Provide additional security support for scheduled events or emergencies.
  • Maintain activity logs and administrative documents as required.
  • Assist and cooperate with law enforcement as necessary.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable civilian law enforcement experience or equivalent military law enforcement experience.
  • Completion of a certified law enforcement training academy or program.
  • Ability to pass criminal background check, drug test, and physical exam.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted state driver's license.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to meet medical/physical fitness requirements.
  • Free from felony convictions and certain misdemeanor crimes.
