About the position

ALTA IT Services is seeking an experienced Accountant to join our team on a contract basis. This position is hybrid, based in Virginia, and involves a variety of accounting activities that are crucial for maintaining the financial integrity of our operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing detailed reviews and analyses of financial statements, ledgers, reconciliations, and associated accounts to ensure compliance with industry standards. This role requires a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Accounting Standard Codification (ASC) as the Accountant will be tasked with preparing financial statements that adhere to these standards. In addition to the preparation of financial statements, the Accountant will perform monthly close activities, which include reviewing and monitoring entries to the Trial Balance, Balance Sheet, and Income Statement accounts, as well as posting necessary adjustments. The role also involves conducting account reconciliations, variance analyses, and providing sufficient supporting documentation for all financial activities. The Accountant will be expected to identify simplifying assumptions and accounting methods, address instances of incorrect application of GAAP/ASC, and recommend solutions to rectify these issues. The position requires in-depth analysis to identify and resolve discrepancies, contributing to quality control and process improvement initiatives. The Accountant will also be responsible for investigating complex discrepancies, data entry errors, and out-of-balance situations, preparing recommendations for immediate action or policy changes to prevent future losses. Additionally, the role includes performing research to assist with inquiries from internal and external auditors, generating variance analysis reports, and applying specialized knowledge of financial accounting and management techniques. The Accountant will also be expected to perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to the overall success of the finance team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accounting activities including review and analysis of financial statements, ledgers, reconciliations, and associated accounts.
  • Conduct monthly close activities, reviewing and monitoring entries to the Trial Balance, Balance Sheet, and Income Statement accounts, and posting adjustments.
  • Perform account reconciliation, analytics, and variance analysis, providing sufficient supporting documentation.
  • Apply knowledge of GAAP and ASC in the preparation of financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and ASC in the preparation of NFCR financial statements.
  • Identify simplifying assumptions and accounting methods, and instances of incorrect application of GAAP/ASC; quantify the impact and recommend solutions.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis to identify, isolate, and resolve discrepancies, contributing to quality control and process improvement.
  • Investigate, resolve, and/or escalate complex discrepancies, data entry errors, and out-of-balance situations; prepare and present recommendations for immediate action or proposals for policy changes.
  • Perform research to assist with responses to inquiries from internal/external auditors.
  • Perform variance analysis and generate reports including associated justification.
  • Apply specialized knowledge of financial accounting and management techniques in analyzing and reporting financial information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in public or private accounting applying complex accounting treatments and resolving complex accounting issues.
  • Experience researching technical accounting issues and making recommendations for the application and implementation of accounting principles.
  • Significant experience and proficiency with data querying, researching, and reporting.
  • Experience working on complex projects with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to present findings and conclusions clearly and concisely.
  • Advanced knowledge of PC applications including Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation and five years of progressive and relevant experience.
  • Advanced skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Advanced analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Expert skill maintaining accuracy with attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skill validating accuracy and applicability of underlying data.
  • Demonstrated skill in presenting complex financial information clearly and concisely.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
