About the position

The CPI Special Investigator Trainee position at the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) involves conducting specialized investigations into child abuse and neglect cases. This role requires collaboration with law enforcement and DFPS staff to provide expert consultation, forensic investigation techniques, and training. The investigator will handle high-profile cases, attend court proceedings, and ensure thorough documentation of investigations while promoting cultural diversity and effective communication within the agency.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct specialized investigations of child abuse and neglect cases as required by management.
  • Serve as a resource and trainer to DFPS staff on forensic interview skills and techniques.
  • Identify and provide for staff development and training needs in forensic child abuse and neglect investigation.
  • Develop and maintain communication and working relationships with law enforcement and other professionals.
  • Provide expert consultation to DFPS staff and the community on complex forensic investigation issues.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews to assess risk of abuse or neglect and model advanced interviewing techniques.
  • Prepare and provide sufficient case documentation for legal proceedings and court cases.
  • Review cases for specific risk factors and assist with forensic investigation techniques.
  • Attend training and participate in professional development as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to maintain unit operations.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a police officer is required.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • TCOLE Intermediate License or equivalent certification.
  • Five years as a Peace Officer with investigation duties related to property crimes or crimes against persons.
  • Experience in forensic investigation skills, including interviewing and evidence collection.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.

Nice-to-haves

  • Sixty (60) hours of college credit from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) years' experience as a Detective/Investigator working with multidisciplinary teams on child abuse investigations.
