The position involves establishing a control system within the Yale-New Haven Health System to ensure the identification and reporting of consumer product-related injuries, including those resulting in death, to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The role focuses on analyzing and investigating injuries associated with consumer products, evaluating the effectiveness of regulations, and identifying trends in new hazards and injury patterns. The individual will work closely with Emergency Department staff and coordinate injury surveillance activities across multiple facilities.

  • Identify and report all injuries and poisonings treated in the Emergency Departments.
  • Coordinate with Emergency Department staff to assist with the identification of diagnoses related to product-related injuries.
  • Review all Emergency Department case records daily and code all in-scope cases as defined by NEISS Coding Manual.
  • Identify cases as defined by Expanded National Electronic Surveillance System.
  • Report all cases daily into a microcomputer supplied by CPSC.
  • Complete all follow-up inquiries as identified by CPSC.
  • Develop a format to report additional information and detailed follow-up interviews as required by CPSC.
  • Coordinate the identification of all trauma-related injury cases seen in the Emergency Department and report such cases in the same format as CPSC cases.
  • Identify and supply Supplemental Study reports as required by CPSC.
  • Establish monthly meetings with relevant departments involved in injury surveillance activity as needed/required per CPSC guidelines.
  • Achieve mandatory completion of minimum performance standard guidelines for quality and quantity of identified cases as outlined by CPSC.
  • Precept other injury surveillance coordinators nationwide to NEISS.
  • Ensure that all consumer product-related physical injuries, injuries resulting in death, and dead-on-arrival cases are reported to CPSC in detail as specified by signed contract.
  • Ensure that all hospital emergency case records are reviewed in a timely manner, not to exceed 5 days, and code all 'in-scope' cases as defined by the NEISS Coding Manual.
  • Provide additional information beyond that specified in the NEISS Coding Manual as requested by CPSC for special surveys.
  • Ensure the physical security of the personal computer provided by the Government.
  • Oversee other injury surveillance data coders for quality and accuracy of identification of injuries.
  • Bachelor's of Science or other relevant college degree preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge in mechanical, chemical, and electrical mechanisms of injury required.
  • Strong background in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Data entry skill required (>90 wpm preferred).
  • Familiarity with computer programs, including Windows, Excel, and Access.
  • Excellent reading skills to review medical records for relevant reportable data.
  • Minimum of 3 years of health care/research experience required.
  • Formal training from the Center for Disease Control Consumer Products and Safety Commission.
  • Knowledge of ISS and AIS scoring systems required.
  • Excellent communication skills required, including both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent working knowledge of EPIC Electronic Medical Record System.
  • Excellent computer and phone skills.
