About the position

The CPW Accounting Technician III position is a vital role within the Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) Accounting Unit, responsible for managing and supporting the financial operations of the Division. This position encompasses responsibilities across three major functional areas: payables, payroll, and revenue. The technician will provide technical accounting and financial system support to CPW statewide units, cost centers, and staff, ensuring that all financial transactions are processed accurately and in a timely manner. This includes processing and researching expenditures and payments, reviewing payroll entries, and managing revenue and cash collected from various CPW offices. The technician will play a crucial role in maintaining a strong internal control environment for the Division's financial activities. This involves ensuring that all financial transactions are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) regulations, and applicable state statutes. The position requires effective communication with various stakeholders, including executive management, cost center managers, and field staff, to ensure clarity and compliance in financial reporting and transactions. In addition to processing financial transactions, the technician will be responsible for training and assisting staff at CPW offices on financial procedures, payroll entry, and revenue reporting. This includes providing customer service, conducting training sessions, and responding to inquiries regarding financial transactions and systems. The role also involves detailed reconciliation and analysis of financial data, process development, and refinement, as well as the preparation of financial reports as needed. Overall, this position is essential for the effective financial management of Colorado Parks & Wildlife, contributing to the mission of conserving and managing the state's natural resources.

Responsibilities

  • Process and research expenditures and payments, including operating, capital, and interagency transactions.
  • Review payroll entries for accuracy and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Manage revenue and cash collected from State Parks and Regional, Registration, and Wildlife Offices.
  • Ensure all financial transactions are recorded timely and properly in accordance with GAAP and state regulations.
  • Provide customer service and perform review procedures to maintain a strong internal control environment.
  • Train and assist staff at CPW Offices on payroll entry and financial reporting procedures.
  • Reconcile bank statements and research discrepancies in financial transactions.
  • Prepare standard and non-standard revenue reports as requested by management.
  • Assist with sales tax collections and filings, journal vouchers, and inventory management.
  • Document process improvements and assist with communication and implementation of financial procedures.

Requirements

  • Three years of relevant experience in accounting, finance, or a related business occupation.
  • A combination of related education in accounting, finance, or business and relevant experience equaling three years may substitute for experience.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using computers and email, particularly with Excel.
  • Excellent customer service skills and problem-solving abilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current or former Colorado Parks & Wildlife work or volunteer experience.
  • Experience working with the CORE financial system.
  • Experience applying accounting principles related to expenses, payroll, and revenue recognition.
