About the position

The CPW Data Manager IV/Species Conservation Data Manager/Analyst position is a critical role within the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) organization, focusing on the management and analysis of species conservation data. This position is responsible for leading statewide activities related to data management for a diverse array of species and conservation programs, including but not limited to wolverine and wolf restoration, status assessments for federally listed terrestrial vertebrate species, and the development of invertebrate and rare plant conservation programs. The role requires a strong emphasis on creating, maintaining, and automating software databases to enhance wildlife management in Colorado. This includes compiling, organizing, storing, analyzing, and reporting on various wildlife datasets, as well as designing analytical tools necessary for evaluating management and research programs. As the staff authority for species conservation data management, the individual will collaborate with various stakeholders, including SCON supervisors, field biologists, and data managers from other CPW programs. The position involves the administration of data systems, ensuring organized and efficient data management practices across all projects. The Data Manager will also be responsible for creating custom databases and code tailored to specific project needs, executing complex queries, and developing innovative solutions to contemporary data challenges. This includes managing large datasets generated from emerging technologies such as GPS and remote camera technology, and ensuring that data systems are updated to accommodate evolving statistical analysis requirements. In addition to data management, the position requires regular interaction with CPW leadership and other personnel to provide interim data summaries, reports, and custom applications for data retrieval. The Data Manager will also be involved in the development of reporting dashboards and custom analyses for various stakeholders, including the Parks and Wildlife Commission and the Colorado Legislature. Overall, this position plays a vital role in supporting CPW's mission to conserve wildlife resources and provide sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and collaborate on data management issues for various species and conservation programs.
  • Create, maintain, and automate software databases for wildlife management.
  • Compile, organize, store, analyze, and report wildlife datasets.
  • Design analytical tools for evaluating management and research programs.
  • Oversee vendor performance for data delivery in major programs.
  • Monitor functionality of data systems and correct associated problems.
  • Maintain backup procedures for data recovery in case of system failure.
  • Build and maintain custom SQL Server databases and code for projects.
  • Execute complex queries to provide data summaries and reports.
  • Develop innovative solutions for managing and retrieving changing data streams.
  • Field requests for interim data summaries and project reports from CPW leadership and other personnel.
  • Develop custom applications for users to retrieve data summaries and reports.
  • Program and disseminate custom analyses and reports for various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience in a related occupation or a combination of education and experience equaling seven years.
  • Proficiency in statistics and data analysis.
  • Strong writing skills and experience in technical writing.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and SQL.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C++, Python, and VBA.
  • Experience with qualitative research and interviewing techniques.
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Nice-to-haves

  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position.
  • Working knowledge of wildlife biology or conservation biology.
