About the position

The CPW Hatchery Technician IV/Assistant Hatchery Manager position at Colorado Parks & Wildlife involves assisting the hatchery manager with managerial and fish production duties to achieve hatchery goals. This role includes overseeing daily operations, managing staff, ensuring aquatic species health, and maintaining compliance with regulations. The position also requires living on-site to provide after-hours support and security for the hatchery.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily and seasonal functions of hatchery management.
  • Establish work unit standards and monitor work results.
  • Identify and define work to be performed and assign duties to staff.
  • Assist with recruitment, selection, and training of new staff.
  • Evaluate and adjust leadership methods in response to dynamic conditions.
  • Assist with procurement of supplies and services for the hatchery.
  • Generate and evaluate hatchery reports and financial data.
  • Formulate and oversee daily work schedules and develop SOPs.
  • Inspect and monitor aquatic species health and administer treatments as needed.
  • Assist with fish culture and propagation activities.

Requirements

  • Four years of work experience in aquaculture, fishery or wildlife biology, or a closely related field.
  • At least one year of experience propagating and rearing native species and/or sport fish.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership experience.
  • Experience in administration duties, fish culture, and distribution.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in spawning, hatching, rearing, stocking, and broodstock management of native aquatic species.
  • Strong level of written and oral communication skills.
