About the position

The Creative Director for Austin Monthly and Austin Home is a pivotal role responsible for shaping the visual identity and overseeing all artistic needs for both publications. This position requires a blend of creativity and organization, as the Creative Director will be tasked with elevating the magazines' presence in the Austin community. The ideal candidate will have a keen understanding of current trends and cultural happenings in Austin, allowing them to create engaging and relevant content that resonates with readers. Collaboration is key in this role, as the Creative Director will work closely with editors and other team members to pitch original ideas and incorporate constructive feedback into their designs. In this role, the Creative Director will oversee freelance photography and graphic design needs, maintaining a robust network of creative freelancers and vendors. They will be responsible for scheduling photoshoots and managing payments for services rendered. Additionally, the Creative Director will design editorial pages for both magazines, collaborating with editors during the pre-production phase to determine themes and page counts. Coordination with the Hearst Central Hub for print production is also a critical aspect of the job, which includes uploading editorial pages, sending PDFs to pre-press, and making necessary revisions. The Creative Director will also take ownership of in-house marketing and advertising needs, creating collateral for events and other marketing materials. They will develop design schemes for special advertising projects, such as Top Lawyers and Faces of ATX, and create digital-only graphics as needed for social media and newsletters. This role demands proficiency in design software, a strong understanding of the print production process, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while delivering innovative magazine layouts consistently.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee freelance photography and graphic needs for both magazines, including maintaining a network of creative freelancers and vendors, scheduling photoshoots, and managing payments.
  • Design editorial pages for both magazines and any special sections published, collaborating with editors to determine themes and page count during pre-production.
  • Coordinate print production needs between magazine editors and Hearst Central Hub, including uploading editorial pages to Cue, sending PDFs to pre-press, and making necessary revisions.
  • Own the design and creation of in-house marketing and advertising needs, such as event collateral and marketing material.
  • Create design schemes for special advertising projects, such as Top Lawyers and Faces of ATX.
  • Create digital-only graphics as needed and requested by editorial, including social share cards or newsletter banners.

Requirements

  • Proficient in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Technical knowledge of the print production process, including paper specifications and file types.
  • Strong print and digital design skills with the ability to deliver innovative magazine layouts consistently.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience converting print designs for digital layouts and specifications.
  • Strong time-management skills and creativity.
