About the position

The Creative Director for Content Design at AJC will play a pivotal role in transforming the organization into a modern media company, focusing on delivering engaging news and information across various platforms. This position is responsible for overseeing a team of motion designers and infographic producers, ensuring the conceptualization and execution of AJC's visual identity. The Creative Director will act as the primary point of contact for large projects, franchises, and video series, managing design projects, bespoke graphics, and site interactives while evolving and upholding the visual identity of AJC's digital video content. As a hands-on creative leader, the Creative Director will own the visual direction and output of the design team, ensuring that all work meets the editorial standards and aligns with the tone and voice of AJC. A deep understanding of audience behavior across digital platforms is essential, as is the ability to create innovative and relevant content. The ideal candidate will be a passionate consumer of digital video and social media, possessing strong editorial judgment and knowledge of the digital and documentary landscape. Superior skills in design, post-production, graphic, and motion design are critical for success in this role. The Creative Director will report to the Head of Video & Audio and must demonstrate self-motivation, organization, and a proactive approach to solving creative challenges. Responsibilities include managing the day-to-day consistency of video and graphic storytelling, building workflows and systems for implementation across teams, and empowering staff through constructive feedback. The role also involves conceptualizing new ideas for daily videos and series, designing still imagery to enhance articles and social platforms, and guiding the team in creating unique visuals that elevate AJC's storytelling.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee a team of motion designers and infographic producers dedicated to AJC's visual identity.
  • Serve as the point person for large projects, franchises, and video series.
  • Manage design projects, bespoke graphics, and site interactives.
  • Uphold the tone and voice of AJC while meeting editorial standards.
  • Create engaging, innovative, and relevant content based on audience behavior.
  • Build workflows, templates, and systems for video and social teams.
  • Empower and encourage staff with thoughtful feedback and analysis.
  • Maintain a consistent look and feel across all AJC platforms and social channels.
  • Conceptualize new ideas for daily videos, series, and franchises.
  • Design and delegate the design of still imagery for articles and social platforms.
  • Support and guide the team in building interactives and unique visuals.
  • Execute projects from conception through design and delivery independently.
  • Juggle multiple projects while adhering to design standards without supervision.
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in data visualization techniques and design tools.
  • Work with the Head of Video to establish KPIs for visuals and contribute to newsroom OKRs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree + 10 years of experience with 5 years in leadership; OR MS with 8+ years of experience OR 14 years with no formal degree.
  • Proven experience leading a team and working well under pressure.
  • Extensive experience in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Outstanding editorial judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Superior editing and post-production skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including holidays and weekends as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with advanced rendering techniques in 3D software.
  • Familiarity with data visualization techniques and design tools.
  • Experience in a digital media or journalism environment.
