About the position

Harper's Bazaar is seeking a Creative Director to play a pivotal role in shaping, sharpening, and steering the brand's creative and visual identity across various platforms, including the website, print, social media, and special projects. This position is designed for an individual who is not only excited to push the content forward but also deeply respects and honors the brand's rich legacy. The Creative Director will oversee a diverse range of projects, from designing magazine covers and fashion features to creating multi-faceted digital packages. The role requires a cohesive approach to brand design, ensuring that all visual elements, from social media graphics to video content, align with the brand's identity and vision. The ideal candidate will be a big-picture thinker who thrives in a dynamic environment, utilizing exceptional management, design expertise, and organizational skills to execute both large and small design projects under tight deadlines. This position demands a leader who can effectively oversee all aspects of design for the brand, adapting to evolving needs while maintaining the highest quality standards. The Creative Director will collaborate closely with the design, visual, and editorial teams to elevate the brand, ensuring that all design projects are completed on time and within budget. Additionally, the role involves brainstorming layout concepts for stories and features, managing the art department, and providing strategic direction to strengthen the brand's presence in the market.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all design for the brand including digital, print, video, social, partnerships, licensing, and more as needs evolve
  • Work closely with the design, visual, and editorial teams to up-level the brand, ensuring that all design projects are completed at highest quality and within budget
  • Collaborate closely with the editorial and photo teams to brainstorm layout concepts for stories, features, and packages, including photos, infographics, motion, and video
  • Oversee the art department, managing projects to meet tight deadlines
  • Manage the art team's workload effectively through delegation
  • Work with the visual team on cover concepts, art-direct cover shoots, and design and produce the cover
  • Provide strategy and direction to strengthen the brand
  • Understand the aesthetic and editorial style and tone of the brand and have a willingness to push it creatively

Requirements

  • 15+ years of post-grad digital and print editorial design experience at a consumer brand, with outstanding design and typographic skills
  • Experience overseeing a consumer editorial brand and leading a design team
  • Expertise in print and digital design, including cover creation, plus experience working with UX design teams
  • Experience art-directing photo shoots, including covers
  • Expert knowledge of InDesign, Woodwing, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, plus UI design principles and design tools
  • Working relationships with top photographers
  • Highly developed organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • A true team-player, kind and open-minded; you know when to assert your expertise and when to let your colleagues shine
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or other relevant area
