The Creative Director plays a pivotal role in this vision, reporting directly to the Executive Creative Director. This position requires a close collaboration with clients to bring a unified vision to life, balancing storytelling, strategy, leadership, and problem-solving to deliver unique solutions tailored to each client’s needs. The Creative Director applies expertise in design methodologies, emerging trends, architectural construction, and interpersonal communication on a daily basis. In this role, the Creative Director will lead, support, and contribute to the project team's design solutions and deliverables for assigned projects. They will specialize in project leadership for cultural institutions, museums, and exhibits, taking on responsibilities for leading large, high-profile, and complex projects that foster lasting social engagement within the community. The Creative Director will act as a guiding voice, establishing, implementing, and reinforcing the creative vision for each project. They will foster a team culture that prioritizes excellence, creativity, and passion, directing and collaborating with multidisciplinary groups, including Designers, Writers, Developers, Engineers, and Architects, to ensure project success. The Creative Director will manage multiple projects and teams professionally, ensuring deadlines are met and client expectations are exceeded. They will lead client presentations and workshops, ensuring that all communications meet DI standards. Quality assurance and control will be a critical part of their responsibilities throughout all design phases, from conceptualization to construction documentation. The role requires a flexible travel schedule, as the Creative Director may need to travel on short notice based on client and project needs. Additionally, they will champion process improvements and best practices within the department, sharing knowledge as a subject matter expert and mentoring team members to support their success.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, support and contribute to the project team's executed design solutions and deliverables for assigned projects.
  • Specialize in project leadership for cultural institutions, museums, and exhibits, leading large, high-profile, and complex projects.
  • Establish, implement, and reinforce the creative vision for projects.
  • Foster a team culture prioritizing excellence, creativity, and passion.
  • Direct and collaborate with multidisciplinary groups to ensure project success.
  • Embed accessibility and inclusivity throughout project phases.
  • Manage multiple projects, processes, and teams professionally, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Lead client presentations, communications, and workshops to meet DI standards.
  • Provide quality assurance and quality control throughout all design phases.
  • Develop project plans considering available resources and budgets.
  • Utilize effective leadership practices to mentor and develop the Creative Studio culture.
  • Maintain a flexible travel schedule based on client and project needs.
  • Steward and manage process improvements and best practices within the department.
  • Articulate and share information as a DI subject matter expert.
  • Champion and support the success of Creative Studio team members.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and development to direct reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.F.A) in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, or related field required.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in an environmental or branded environments design role required.
  • At least 6+ years experience in museums, cultural, and/or exhibit design field required.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills with clients and team members.
  • Strong proficiency with Google Workspace, Miro, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch Up, Revit, Rhino, and BIM 360.
  • Ability to create digital or hand sketches to convey design concepts.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and relationship management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with business development, estimating, writing proposals and creative briefs.
  • Ability to give direction and constructive critique.
  • Knowledge of material and fabrication methods relevant to design.
