About the position

The Crew Leader Traffic position at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) involves leading crews in traffic operations to ensure safety on Virginia's roads. The Crew Leader is responsible for coordinating personnel and equipment, providing technical guidance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Responsibilities

• Lead crews performing traffic operations and maintenance tasks.
• Review requests and field conditions, gathering data and preparing necessary documentation.
• Schedule assignments and identify proper procedures for work assignments.
• Review work to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
• Perform manual labor and equipment operation, including preventative maintenance.
• Document and report daily crew activities, accomplishments, and materials usage.
• Provide technical advice to contractors as needed.

Requirements

• Experience coordinating and scheduling daily work, personnel, and equipment.
• Experience with traffic control device installation and data collection.
• Skill in using computers and software applications.
• Ability to obtain a CDL and DOT Medical card within 11 months of employment.
• Skill in providing good customer service.
• Experience applying federal, state, and VDOT regulations regarding traffic control devices and safety standards.
• Experience reading and interpreting highway plans and technical documents.

Nice-to-haves

• Valid CDL and VDOT Flagger Certification.
• First Aid/CPR Certification.
• Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Training.
