About the position

The Crime Analyst position at the City of Raleigh involves non-sworn analytical work focused on the collection, analysis, and dissemination of crime data. The role is critical in tracking citywide criminal trends, preparing reports, and providing technical assistance for special projects within the Detective Division. The analyst will maintain multiple databases and utilize various software tools to support law enforcement efforts in understanding and responding to crime patterns.

Responsibilities

  • Tracks citywide criminal trends and patterns.
  • Produces hot sheets and reports associated with crime patterns.
  • Prepares weekly crime numbers reports and specialized maps.
  • Monitors criminal activity, performs analysis, and prepares reports utilizing crime data.
  • Maintains knowledge of the police reporting system, data entry, storage, and retrieval techniques.
  • Demonstrates independent thinking and organizes multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Provides maps and statistical information for the Detective Division and other divisions as needed.
  • Responds to requests for assistance from departmental members, City employees, the media, and the public.
  • Maintains effective interpersonal relationships with department members and the public.
  • Prepares accurate, clear, concise written correspondence and statistical reports.
  • Processes and files warrants, maintains quality control for wanted persons, and performs validation of NCIC wanted persons.
  • Safely operates city vehicles for various administrative tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, criminology, public administration, or a related field.
  • 1 year of experience in criminology, criminal justice research, or criminal justice policy.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Specialized training in ARC GIS and annual training in 28 CFR Part 23.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the geography of the city.
  • Familiarity with crime analysis techniques and procedures.
  • Experience with open source (internet) searches.
  • Basic networking knowledge.
