About the position

Incumbents in this classification conduct a variety of crime intelligence, tactical, administrative and statistical analyses in support of Police Department activities. A Crime & Intelligence Analyst I collects and analyzes data related to crime patterns, crime trends, traffic statistics and human/criminal network intelligence; assists with administering crime analysis databases and the report management system; assists in monitoring and researching known subjects within the city; assists with creating local, state, and federal statistics for City-wide and in-house reporting requirements; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors, searches, and conducts background research of social media posts and open sources of information based on keywords, critical events, and subjects of interest.
  • Captures posts, photos, and videos of interest.
  • Collect, collate, and analyze a variety of criminal, statistical, intelligence, economic, geographic, and open source information in support of Department activities.
  • Utilize diverse sources of information, including calls for service, crime, census, demographic, and open source data.
  • Convert large amounts of data into actionable intelligence.
  • Provide intelligence to assist in identifying crime problems.
  • Forecast criminal trends based on analyses of current and past criminal activity.
  • Develop and test crime prediction and resource allocation statistical models.
  • Assist in advising sworn staff of areas of high crime probability.
  • Analyze known offenders, MOs, and timelines to perform suspect/crime correlation.
  • Develop and prepare charts, graphs, maps, reports, bulletins and related materials.
  • Present analysis to police administrators and City officials.
  • Make written and oral presentations using maps, charts and graphs.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with sworn personnel, city employees, representatives of other agencies, the media and the general public.
  • Answer inquiries from the public, businesses, community groups and websites regarding crime activity, trends and patterns.
  • Proactively monitor local, regional and national crime trends.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of information.
  • Works in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks and requests simultaneously.
  • Analyzes and interprets large amounts of statistical data.
  • Collects, evaluates and conducts a detailed analysis of intelligence.
  • Develops link analysis, time/temporal analysis, social media analysis, criminal threat analysis.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual statistical reports for management.
  • Communicates trend, suspect characteristic and intelligence data to operational components of the police department.
  • Provides information to appropriate law enforcement partners.
  • Develops visual presentations such as event flow analysis illustrations and activity flow charts.
  • Develops, uses and/or maintains databases using various software applications.
  • Contacts governmental agencies to gather criminal statistical data.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with area agency partners.
  • Testifies in court regarding criminal activity data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Crime Analysis, Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Psychology, Criminal Justice, Information Systems, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Two years of experience building databases; interpreting and making inferences from statistical information; collecting, organizing, and summarizing data.
  • Experience analyzing and distilling large amounts of information from social networking profiles, online forums, and articles.
  • Experience working in Microsoft Office and Google Suites.
  • Experience with popular social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and TikTok.

Nice-to-haves

  • Good-standing membership of the International Association of Crime Analysts/IACA.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain eAgent certifications.

  • Salary range: $54,005 - $59,064 annually.
