The Crime Lab Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing forensic investigations related to death cases in Arkansas. This role involves supervising a team of forensic investigators, managing the transport and chain of custody of deceased individuals, and ensuring accurate documentation and communication with law enforcement and coroners. The coordinator also handles public inquiries regarding autopsy examinations and reports, while ensuring compliance with safety and procedural standards.

  • Supervise a staff of Forensic Investigators conducting death investigations.
  • Organize and supervise the transport and chain of custody of deceased individuals for forensic examinations.
  • Write reports and obtain medical records or other specimens related to death investigations.
  • Perform follow-up investigations on behalf of Medical Examiners as requested.
  • Obtain crime scene photos from coroners and law enforcement personnel.
  • Communicate with coroners and law enforcement agencies for medical examiner consultations.
  • Coordinate the release of deceased individuals to appropriate facilities.
  • Handle public inquiries regarding examinations performed by the Medical Examiner, including limited release of autopsy information to family members.
  • Mail out autopsy reports when appropriate.
  • Provide backup for other clerical staff and perform other duties as required.
  • Ensure all case information is contained in the laboratory LIMS.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, natural science, or a related field.
  • Three years of professional experience in death investigation, law enforcement, or a medical-related field.
  • Basic certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) or the ability to achieve it within a year of hire.
  • Completion of basic supervisory training provided to state employees.
  • Advanced certification by the ABMDI within two years after achieving basic certification.
  • Experience in evidence handling techniques.
  • Knowledge of proper equipment and instruments used in forensic investigations.
