About the position

The Criminal Investigator position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs involves conducting in-depth investigations of criminal activities impacting Indian country. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement practices, independent judgment, and the ability to make immediate decisions. The investigator will be responsible for apprehending suspects, gathering evidence, and preparing detailed reports for legal proceedings.

Responsibilities

  • Organize, plan, and conduct investigations of major and/or sensitive criminal activity occurring on or impacting Indian country.
  • Apprehend, arrest, detain, and interview subjects suspected of violations of Federal, State, Tribal, and local laws.
  • Testify in hearings and trials, and secure search warrants through processing of affidavits.
  • Gather information at crime scenes, document relationships of facts, relevance of evidence, and validity of allegations involving criminal activity.
  • Prepare and/or review reports of investigations to ensure clarity, conciseness, and impartiality for submission to law enforcement or prosecutors.
  • Perform surveillance of sites and suspects and/or conduct sensitive undercover assignments to obtain evidence.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-07 level in investigating and arresting individuals suspected of crimes, participating in surveillance, collecting evidence, and preparing case reports (for GL-09).
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-09 level in carrying out investigative duties related to narcotics criminal matters (for GS-11).
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in conducting complex criminal investigations (for GS-12).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background security investigation and drug testing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in federal law enforcement or similar roles.
  • Knowledge of Indian law and tribal regulations.
