About The Position

The Criminal Prosecutor Attorney position in West Valley City involves performing civil and criminal law functions under the supervision of the Legal Department Division Head. Requirements

  • Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school.
  • Membership in good standing with the Utah State Bar.
  • Experience in legal research and writing.
  • Basic understanding of municipal law and federal and state constitutional law.
  • Excellent command of the English language regarding reading, writing, and communicating.

Responsibilities

  • Prosecute or assist in the prosecution of assigned criminal, civil, and administrative cases on behalf of the City.
  • Conduct legal research and evidence gathering for prosecution duties.
  • Screen cases for possible criminal prosecution and manage discovery processes.
  • Prepare for and participate in bench and jury trials, motion hearings, and conferences with defendants and attorneys.
  • Draft correspondence, legal opinions, reports, ordinances, resolutions, pleadings, and other written materials.
  • Research legal issues and provide clear analyses to represent the City in municipal law matters.
  • Handle prosecution of City ordinance violations as assigned.
  • Attend City Council meetings and other meetings as requested by the City Attorney.
  • Travel to and attend court, meetings, and conferences/seminars on behalf of the City.
  • Maintain professional association memberships and stay updated on legal trends.
