About The Position

The Criminalist position is a full-time role based in San Marcos, TX, responsible for the meticulous handling of evidence in accordance with Texas law. The individual will prepare, collect, document, process, maintain, and dispose of evidence, ensuring compliance with the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. This role requires a strong commitment to detail and accuracy, as the Criminalist will be responsible for preparing reports and other written documentation as needed, while also providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders. The position involves direct communication with law enforcement officials regarding the status of evidence, and the Criminalist may be required to testify in court as a witness when necessary. In addition to evidence management, the Criminalist will be tasked with receiving and collecting evidence/property, maintaining care and custody, and ensuring proper release or destruction of evidence in accordance with established operating procedures. The role also includes developing evidence/property statistics and reports, researching and returning property to its rightful owner, and preserving crime scenes through photography, video recording, and diagramming. The Criminalist will be responsible for processing and analyzing collected evidence, including fingerprints and DNA, and must be prepared to respond to active crime scenes outside of normal working hours. The position requires collaboration with law enforcement to secure crime scenes and establish restricted perimeters to protect evidence integrity. The Criminalist will also be responsible for collecting various types of evidence, including firearms, trace evidence, and biological samples, while ensuring compliance with legal standards and procedures. The ability to render credible testimony in court is essential, as is the capacity to handle potentially stressful situations when interacting with the public. Overall, this role is critical in supporting law enforcement efforts and ensuring the integrity of evidence management within the criminal justice system.
