About the position

As a Critical Environment Field Service Engineer (FSE) within the Cloud Operation & Innovation (CO+I) team, you will play a vital role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies that power our online services, including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Azure platform. This position is essential for ensuring the operational efficiency and reliability of our data centers, which comprise a global portfolio of over 100 data centers and 1 million servers. You will be part of a team dedicated to personal and professional development, with opportunities for training, growth, and participation in programs such as Career Rotation and Diversity & Inclusion training. Your responsibilities will include ensuring compliance with data center business unit and service-level policies, engaging with appropriate teams to execute tasks or projects, and managing programs associated with your area of responsibility. You will also be expected to demonstrate conscientiousness regarding cost adherence to budget requirements, follow safety and security policies, and participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes as appropriate. The role requires a proactive approach to maximizing Critical Environment (CE) availability and operational efficiency, overseeing the maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment, and supporting the delivery of the data center's Emergency Preparedness and Response plan. In addition to technical responsibilities, you will be expected to contribute to a positive team environment, share best practices, and provide mentorship across the data center. Your success will be measured by your ability to uphold service quality, completeness, and the resulting customer experience, while embodying the company's culture and values.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with data center business unit and service-level policies.
  • Engage with appropriate teams and resources to execute tasks or projects.
  • Manage programs associated with your area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrate conscientiousness on cost adherence to budget requirements; keep costs reasonable and contribute to staying within budget.
  • Follow and adhere to safety and security policies and procedures; report immediately any safety or security issue or concern.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes as appropriate.
  • Maximize Critical Environment (CE) availability in conjunction with our landlord partner at our leased Data Center to ensure optimal operational efficiency.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in our leased Data Center.
  • Reduce high-impact and human-error Critical Environment (CE) incidents year over year.
  • Deliver on cost/energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Support delivery of the Data Center's Emergency Preparedness and Response plan and act as an escalation point for all facilities-related issues within our leased data center.
  • Coordinate, plan, schedule, and supervise CE audit and compliance verification as needed.
  • Ensure routine reporting to effectively manage and analyze our Power/Temperature/Relative Humidity, and SLA monitoring.
  • Establish and enhance working relationships and engagement with our Engineering Group (EG) and Landlord partner.
  • Work with regional and global peers to share and build best practices across the entire data center portfolio.
  • Share best practices; assist others in learning roles, processes, and procedures.
  • Provide mentorship across the data center for specific expertise.
  • Seek training opportunities that meet the interests of the business as well as own career goals and objectives.
  • Suggest ways for reducing risk of performing maintenance; work with others to accommodate scheduling needs.
  • Suggest improvements in implementation based on depth of understanding.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by learning and adopting best practices.
  • Contribute constructively during team meetings and in cross-disciplinary collaboration within the service team.
  • Hold self-accountable for the end-to-end service quality, completeness, and resulting customer experience.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent AND 1+ year industry experience in a data center or other critical environment facility with a mechanical or electrical focus OR 2+ years industry experience in a data center or other critical environment facility with a mechanical or electrical focus and college course work.
  • Ability to meet customer and/or government security screening requirements, including a Cloud Background Check and citizenship verification.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3+ years' experience in Critical Environment infrastructure (e.g., UPS, Generator, AHU) or IT infrastructure (e.g., Server, SAN, Networking, Capacity, DC Rack/Enclosure, structured cabling).
  • Bachelor's Degree or Technical College certification in mechanical or electrical engineering and/or service working on large scale Critical Environment projects with the operation of IT infrastructure.
